My bold idea
The basic thrust of my research involves questions of gender identity in Latin American urban space, particularly as part of the process of new democratic institutions in the past two decades.
My inspiration
I went to graduate school in the late 1950s and early 1960s and began my teaching career in the 1960s. I was inspired by fellow students and colleagues involved in the struggle for gender equality. I was also inspired by the struggle against authoritarianism and neofascism in various Latin American societies where I taught and did research, especially as that struggle also impinged on gender equality.
My achievements
To have given 45 years of my professional life to ASU and to the development of important programs in the humanities, especially where Latin America and gender studies are concerned.
