Real-world romance

My bold idea

Media literacy (aka critical thinking) is my passion and my mission. My bold idea has been “teaching you how to control the media rather than having the media control you.” Through my media literacy expertise I help men and women “get real about romance” by debunking media myths and stereotypes that ruin real-life relationships. Instead I substitute healthy relational strategies that the media rarely depict.

My inspiration

It’s three-fold: Alice in Wonderland (my personal archetypal media heroine because she rescues herself through critical thinking and courage); Ludwig Borne’s statement: “Losing an illusion makes you wiser than finding a truth;” and all those who continue to ask for and benefit from my work.

My achievements

Unlike other English-speaking nations, we don’t require media literacy in all schools, so my achievement is overcoming that challenge. I’m honored and privileged that my media literacy website (www.RealisticRomance.com) and my textbooks are used worldwide. And yes, I’m blessed to “walk my talk” in my own marriage to Dr. David Natharius, a gender communication and visual media literacy expert who encourages and shares my mission.
