The U.S. food system accounts for around 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, while it fails the over 44 million Americans facing hunger. Creating new and sustainable food systems that can support the world’s growing population is going to mean rethinking the fundamentals of farming. Researchers at ASU are working with farmers, government agencies, schools and other partners to transform food systems to promote environmental and individual health, including stamping out hunger.

In Arizona’s Maricopa County, 645 people died of heat-related causes in 2023, a 52% jump from the previous year. But heat is a growing issue for people across the nation. At ASU, researchers are bringing visibility to the deadly issue of extreme heat. Scientists and scholars from a range of disciplines are working with communities to measure and understand extreme heat and the risks it poses. They also guide policy that protects lives and well-being in an increasingly warm world.

Biodiversity provides things we may take for granted, like clean air and water, a healthy climate, pest control, medicines, and food. Threats to these resources make conservation a top priority for our future.
